Platforms and Pet Rocks and Pirates–Oh My~! The Adventure Pals is on Kickstarter.

The Adventure Pals is an adorable 2D adventure platformer with a lot of heart. Team up with your pet giraffe, Sparkles, in order to save your parents from being turned into hotdogs by the nefarious Dr. B. After nearly three long years of development the developer, Massive Monster, needs your help to make this project a reality.

We gals here NeedtoKnow love, love, love cute things–well, I do; Niko scoffs in my general direction–and The Adventure Pals has no shortage of cuteness. Call me biased, but they had me at the title screen.

But then I suppose I should have expected that from a developer whose mascot looks like this:

Massive Monster is a collection of three gents–Jay, Julian, and, uh, Jimp–who have amassed development experience over the course of creating 50+ Flash games before bringing their first, what they call a “fully fledged game title,” to Kickstarter.

If you’re wondering where the third dev is, I haven’t the slightest idea. Massive Monster: if you happen to be reading, I’d love an image of all of you guys ❤ P.S. Those hats are adorable and I want one.

Anywho, The Adventure Pals draws inspiration from well-known titles such as Adventure Time, Castle Crashers, Zelda 2, and Banjo Kazooie and it certainly wears its influences on its sleeve. The happy-go-lucky script and zany art style are reminiscent of Adventure Time while your giraffe pal helps you get around much like Kazooie did Banjo. Behemoth  fans will feel right at home with the satisfying, solid feel of the combat, the backpack, and the level up system.

LevelUp

In my opinion, it’s pretty fantastic that the points you spend are reflected by your character: i.e. if you level up your main character’s health, his hat changes.

During my playthrough, I thoroughly enjoyed the fluidness of the platforming as well as the oomph behind every sword swing and rock chuck. There are multiple ways to get through the stages (or I can assume from the one I played) as well as treasures to pick up. The soundtrack was also a joy to listen to, fitting in nicely with the cutesy, vibrant aesthetic. The 20 or so minute demo included a taste of romping about the map on your giraffe, collecting secret cupcakes, and even a boss fight–all shown below.

And platforming, of course. Lots of platforming.

I can’t say I know what the purpose of those cupcakes are, but they certainly looked delicious and only made me wonder what else the game had in store for me later on. And, while the demo doesn’t represent the final product, it’s a pretty good indication that the final project will be fabulous.

Planned features include:

  • Explore 5 different areas each of which has 25 levels, a boss, towns, mini games, shops & other quite interesting things!
  • Local 2 player Co – Operative play.
  • 10+ hours of gameplay.
  • Hundreds of traps and enemies.
  • Immersive Story with animated cutscenes with hilarities guaranteed.
  • Adventures, Quests and crazy townsfolk.
  • Giraffe filled good times with happy smiles and family friendly giggles.
  • 1080p 60fps.
  • Gamepad support.
  • Warning: Will make you hungry for hot dogs (sorry veggies).
  • And more!

You can find out more on their Kickstarter. They also have a website. Stalk them at will!

As of right now, The Adventure Pals is sitting pretty at 50% of their goal with a little under two weeks left. Any funds above their goal will help them make the game even more awesome and that would be, well, awesome.

Stay in the know, gamers ❤
